Airline policy is rarely one policy. The headline rule a carrier advertises — “no change fees”, “free carry-on”, “refundable within 24 hours” — is the starting point, but what you can actually do with a ticket comes down to the fare rules attached to the specific seat you bought. Two people on the same flight, in the same cabin, can have completely different options because one paid a basic economy fare and the other did not.

Two rights worth knowing
The 24-hour rule. For flights touching the United States, US Department of Transportation rules require airlines to let you cancel a booking made directly with them for a full refund within 24 hours of purchase, provided you booked at least seven days before departure. Tickets bought through third parties are not always covered.
Cancelled or significantly changed flights. If the airline cancels your flight or changes it significantly and you choose not to travel on the alternative offered, you are generally entitled to a refund to your original form of payment — not only a voucher.
Before you call
What you can change depends on the fare rules attached to your ticket, not just the airline's headline policy. Two passengers on the same flight can have completely different options depending on what they paid.
- Your confirmation code and, if you have it, the 13-digit ticket number
- Passenger names as they appear on the booking
- Whether the fare was basic economy — the most restricted type
- Whether any part of the trip has already been flown
